Neurovascular
Vascular Neurology Department – Pierre Wertheimer Hospital – Hospices Civils de Lyon
The vascular neurology department specializes in the management of strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). As a referral center equipped with a neurovascular intensive care unit and access to mechanical thrombectomy, it conducts clinical and translational research on stroke in collaboration with several research teams.

Research themes
Research activities combine clinical and translational research across four main areas:
- Pathophysiology and prognosis of stroke: inflammation, biological and imaging biomarkers, microbiota, and environmental determinants;
- Imaging, multimodal data, and artificial intelligence, to better characterize strokes and predict prognosis and treatment response;
- Acute-phase treatments and neuroprotection in ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage;
- Prevention and post-stroke care pathways: atherosclerosis, cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, etiological assessment, secondary prevention, and socio-territorial determinants.
Main ongoing projects
ANR CHITOSANNEUROPROTECT: development of an iron-chelating treatment for acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke (PI: T.-H. Cho).
ANR CMRO2: study of cerebral oxygen metabolism via MRI in ischemic stroke as a prognostic biomarker (PI: T.-H. Cho).
PHRC CONCISE: evaluation of a multimodal cardiac, cervical, and intracranial MRI approach for the etiological assessment of ischemic stroke and TIA (PI: L. Mechtouff).
PHRC PEACH II: evaluation of levetiracetam for the prevention of seizures during the acute phase of intracerebral hemorrhage (PI: L. Derex).
EQUITY-STROKE – SHAPE-Med: study of socioeconomic and territorial determinants of care and life trajectories following stroke (PI: L. Mechtouff).
Cohorts
HIBISCUS-STROKE: a prospective cohort of patients with ischemic stroke treated by thrombectomy, combining clinical, biological, and imaging data, with a biobank.
RELATE: a registry of patients with ischemic stroke treated by thrombolysis and/or thrombectomy.
